we the mango people
of this banana republic
are really happy!
We paint our faces
in colours of tricolour
in place of happiness
in place of laughter
we shout “jai Hind”
and forget
all those lies, fake promises
all the corruption
hunger, poverty and unemployment
we dance samba on the beat of drums
and sing like parrots
without understanding
what we are singing
may be we truly are
the mango people of banana republic
living in solidarity with holy cow
just like you said
because when time comes
we will gather outside polling booth
and vote you or your kin
Funny but relevant questions one has to ask of the nation that faces many issues. Good one Sharmishtha!
if we dont, then we most probably deserve that exploitation.
A really powerful poem, Sharmishtha. The images are vivid. I really hope that you and your nation find your way through to a shiny end.
thanks for the prayers corinne, i too pray the same for all of us. a life full of light, and happiness.
Hard to put politics into one’s life– well written!
we cant swallow it and cant spit it out!
Powerfully well expressed, Trisha.
