We look away

sharmishtha basu

Recently a study said the province of India where i live, west bengal is number one in human trafficking. I somehow believe that the study is authentic. Should not we, esp those who have the power should be doing something about it or are we too busy to enjoy our privileged lives? If it is that, then its a shame, is not it?

  1. very sensitively pointed the flaw and the way everyone ignores it..Sharmishtha ! consider this one to bea part of the selection from my side in your anthology.

    • thanks soumyav, i will add this one up. its sad that even though we have a woman chief minister now since quite sometime these things are happening in full fledge.

public awareness is must. i am thinking about doing a bit but sadly these girls are trafficked from villages, to reach them television or movies are the best media not blog or newspapers.

      • I know its very hard to reach to them and most of them are lured with golden dreams. The life changing so fast at such a pace and the meagre means of earning sometimes lead them on such path.

      • apart from that a huge number of them are trapped by lure of love and marriage. some thing has to be done about it. may be the governments can start educating these things at school instead of teaching them things that wont help them in any way.

  2. add this one as well.
that apart, you are right.the situation is terrible. But what makes it worse is the “what-do-I-care” attitude prevalent in most of us..

  3. very powerful one,Sharmistha. Those elected by us start considering themselves of the ruling class which has nothing to do with the problems of common men. They feel they are perched high and the grave situation of the earth can not reach them Our own apathy and excessive tolerance power is also to be blamed. We still can’t stand together for a cause and reason.when some one is victimized it’s not our but their problem and the so called leader flourish on this very reality.

  4. Women have been ill treated from day one I suppose. they were buried alive, were sold as slaves. kept to satisfy lust, humiliated, mocked——OMG— why is man so coward? why hurt the most beautiful creation of Allah. may the man ever realize that he was born from her only-
Very well pointed out my dear Sharmishtha

  5. Ohh, I like this very much. It can be so easy to ignore the suffering that goes on in the world, especially if you don’t see it in your every day life…but it’s real, it’s happening every day, and it’s important to at least acknowledge that, and try to do what you can to alleviate suffering.

Very powerful poem. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Unfortunately, it is happening everywhere and governmnets stand by and let it happen! There should be the the hardest penalties forced upon them that participate in this evil! But i think many in different governments around the world might participate in it themselves. It is growing rapidly all around the world…and it should just not be! Strong message in your poem, my sister! I love it!

    • dearest brother,
i too have that conviction, that they dont eradicate it because they actively participate in it. i believe common people should stop believing that people in power will ever care for them and start doing these things themselves- after all, its their daughters and sisters.
